Gardens and designed landscapes

Fife is fortunate to have a wealth of beautiful landscapes and gardens. Although the majority are in private ownership, many can be visited.

Historic Scotland maintains an inventory of gardens and designed landscapes considered to be of national significance. This is assessed through a number of values, including:

  • Work of Art
  • Historical
  • Horticultural, Arboricultural and Silvicultural
  • Architectural
  • Scenic
  • Nature Conservation
  • Archaeological

Although this is not a statutory designation, Fife Council is committed to safeguarding these important sites, and the Inventory is recognised formally in the planning system. Since 1992, planning authorities are required to consult Historic Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage on applications that affect Inventory sites.

Fife has 31 sites contained on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes. Details of the individual sites can be accessed through the Historic Scotland website.
