Burials and cremations

The day-to-day administration and maintenance of the records for burials and cremations taking place in Fife is the responsibility of Fife Council's Bereavement Services and it is our aim to provide a personal and respectful burial and cremation service.

The Council runs two crematoria; one in Dunfermline and one in Kirkcaldy.

Our opening hours can be found by clicking on the facility information/contact links below. The gardens are open at all times.

The term "buying a grave space" is often used and can be misunderstood as you do not actually own the land itself.  The ownership of the cemetery land remains with the Council.  What is actually being purchased is the Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial in a grave space for a term of 99 years.

As a registered owner of the Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial, you have the automatic right to be buried in the grave.  You may also allow others to be buried in the grave (space permitting).

The decision on whether to have a burial or cremation will depend on a number of factors such as the person's own wishes, the views of the executor, the wishes of the next of kin and the costs involved.

Funerals can be expensive but you may be able to get help if you or your partner are receiving one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support,
  • income-based Jobseeker's Allowance,
  • Working Families Tax Credit,
  • Housing Benefit,
  • Council Tax Benefit,
  • Disabled Persons Tax Credit;

You can find out more information on the Scottish Government website, and you will have to complete and return a form to jobcentre plus.

Please click on the Bereavement Services Charges 2019-20 link in the publications section below to read/download the full list of charges for burial services.

If you require any further information please call the Bereavement Services staff on the telephone numbers listed at the bottom of this page.  Our staff will be happy to answer any questions that you may have and to decide what is best for you if you choose not to use the services of your local funeral director.
