Apply for a school place

Choosing a school

Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions you will make for your child and some simple steps can help you prepare to get the best education for them.  To have the best chance of getting your child into the primary school of your choice, you must apply well in advance.  The process of choosing a school for your child can seem daunting, but starting your preparation and planning early can help you to make a well informed choice.

Making an early start will mean that you are less likely to miss key deadlines.  More information about a school in your catchment area is available from the School Catchment Checker or you can contact us for a list.

Enroling in school

If you are happy to send your child to their catchment school you need to contact them to arrange your child’s enrolment.

We normally start to advertise information about enrolment during November of the year before your child is due to begin school.

We ask that you register your child for entry into primary one in February of each year.

As part of the enrolment application we also need:

  • Your child’s birth certificate
  • Proof that you live in the catchment area (for example, a utility bill or child tax credit form).

We will let you know if your child has been given a place as soon as possible.

We can’t allocate places until we know what demand will be like, and what places are available at individual schools.

What if there are no places available at the local school?

If, for example, you moved to a new area after April you could find there are no places available in your local school. In these circumstances your child would be placed at another school and go on a waiting list for the local school.

Children on the waiting list are allocated a place on a priority basis:

  • Priority 1 - children living within the catchment area
  • Priority 2 - children with a sibling (or siblings) s already attending the school
  • Priority 3 - closeness to the school

For more information about choosing a school, the Scottish Government has produced a publication 'Choosing a School' which provides guidance for parents on the placing request system you can view a copy by clicking here.
