Missing or out of contact child

In all missing persons cases we would first

  • contact the police;
  • file a missing persons report;
  • listen to police advice; and
  • take action to assist.

When a child known to social services goes missing:

When a child or children who go missing from local authority care.  They are likely to be vulnerable when they run away.

The reasons for their absence can be varied.  Their situation is complex and cannot be viewed in isolation from their :

  • home circumstances; and
  • in care experience

Professionals should take great care when a person goes missing and when they return.  The professionals must collaborate to ensure a consistent and coherent response for the child.

Police Scotland and Social Work staff work together to manage 'missing' episodes.  It's important that staff in both agencies work together.
