Employees are legally entitled to take a reasonable period of unpaid time off to deal with an emergency involving a dependant (defined as a partner, child or parent, or someone who lives with the employee as part of their family).   This leave is only intended to cover unforeseen matters.


The period of time off should be long enough to allow the employee to cope with the crisis or to make alternative / longer-term care arrangements.  Normally, this will be one or two days but this will depend on the individual circumstances.


If the employee is looking for a longer period of leave than is deemed reasonable to deal with the immediate emergency, they may request a further period of unpaid leave (e.g. special leave, parental leave).
