New care villages for Fife
Fife Council’s 10 care homes have a strong history of providing outstanding residential care for older people.
The existing care homes are now between 30 and 50 years old. The design and capacity to meet service users’ needs now and in the future has required us to review all the buildings and consider what options are available to enable us to continue to deliver high quality care in the future.
In October 2012, the Council made a commitment to replace the existing care homes and asked us to develop plans for each area. In March 2013 they agreed the £5.35m Business Case to develop a new 60-bed care home as part of a new care village in Kirkcaldy which would also see the development of 26 extra care and specific needs bungalows, a community drop-in facility and a day care centre. The care home will replace Appin House and Raith Gates care homes in Kirkcaldy.
In the Autumn of 2013, following an extensive consultation period, sites were identified for two further care villages in Glenrothes and Lumphinnans. These will replace South Parks and Alan McLure care homes in Glenrothes; as well as Jenny Gray House in Lochgelly and Valley House in Cowdenbeath. In May 2014, the Council agreed the Business Cases for these two developments and to funding of £13.5m for the two 60-bed care homes and day care centres. Funding for 30 extra-care housing units and a community drop-in facility was also agreed.
Options for the four remaining care homes are being considered this year and it is anticipated that recommendations will be made to the Council’s Executive Committee early next year. The care homes being looked at are:
- Ladywalk House, Anstruther
- Northeden House, Cupar
- Matthew Fyfe Home, Dunfermline
- Methilhaven Homes, Methil
