Pensions Reform – Freedom and Choice
As you may have heard in the news, pension reforms came into effect on 6 April 2015 offering greater flexibility (‘Freedom and Choice’) in the way that individuals aged 55 and over can access their Defined Contribution (DC) pensions.
The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is a public sector Defined Benefit (DB) scheme and therefore the flexibilities under ‘Freedom and Choice’ do not apply.
However, members of the LGPS have the right to transfer their pension benefits out of the LGPS to a DC pension scheme.
Members should think very carefully before transferring out their LGPS benefits. The Local Government Association has produced a Q&A leaflet for members and the Pensions Regulator Service has published a booklet about the potential risks of transferring.
