Conservation areas

A conservation area is an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.

Fife has 48 conservation areas. More than 7 percent of the total in Scotland.

The Council is responsible for designating conservation areas, but we consult the public over boundary changes, or if a new area is to be designated.

The boundaries of the St Andrews Conservation Area and the Hepburn Gardens (St Andrews) Conservation Area were changed in 2016. Maps of these boundary changes can be viewed in the list of publications at the foot of this page.
