Assisted School Transport
We organise transport to schools and other educational establishments on behalf of the Education Service for more than 750 pupils with additional support needs, as well as transport for approximately 90 pupils who are looked after and accommodated by the Social Work Service.
Transport is provided for various reasons. These include:
- mobility difficulties,
- sensory impairment,
- speech and language problems; and
- challenging behaviour that requires specialist support.
Not all pupils are able to attend their mainstream school and many have to travel quite a distance in order to attend the school or unit that best suits their needs.
Transport is often required throughout the school day as there are pupils who are on split placements and others who cannot attend on a full time basis. In order to ensure that the transport provided is appropriate to each pupil’s needs an individual assessment is done to establish the best way for them to travel and a suitable vehicle is contracted using this information.
There are approximately 300 vehicles operating every school day with most provided by the commercial sector. Contracts are awarded as a result of a tender but not always to the lowest bidder, in these cases it is the provision of an appropriate vehicle that is vital.
There are currently 60 contracts using wheelchair accessible vehicles and there continues to be an increasing demand for this type of vehicle to undertake school transport work. Although not all pupils need an escort to travel with them, there are currently around 145 escorts employed, on a daily basis by the Council, to look after the general welfare of the pupils on the transport.
