Road Safety & Traffic management

Traffic volumes have risen rapidly in the UK over the last twenty years.  This has put great strain on the road network. Fife Council carry out monitoring and make alterations to improve safety for all road users.

Engineering Schemes

Alterations to the road layout can make substantial improvements to road safety and traffic flows. The area teams design projects from major junction realignment to signing and lining alterations.

Road Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO's)

Fife Council have powers under the road traffic act to create Traffic Regulation Orders.  These legal Orders are required for the implementation of restrictions including parking and speed limits.  Promotion of an Order requires consultation with police, Councillors and public. This can be a lengthy process due to the level of consultation required.

Traffic Calming

Vehicles being driven at excessive speed are often the cause and increase the severity of road crashes.  Speeding also reduces the quality of life for residents and other road users.  To maintain appropriate speeds, particularly in residential areas, traffic calming can be used. This can take the form of speed bumps, chicanes or electronic signing.

Crossing Facilities

To improve safety for all road users Fife Council has installed different types of crossing facilities including over bridges, subways, signalised and zebra crossings.
