Privacy Notice

This Privacy Notice explains how we use the information that we collect about you.

Fife Council on behalf of the Fife Housing Register Partners uses the information provided by you within your housing application form in order to assess your housing circumstances and to enable you to join the housing list.

We have statutory functions to process these applications for housing in terms of the Housing (Scotland) Act 1987, Housing (Scotland) Act 2001 and Housing (Scotland) Act 2014.

The personal information we gather and use includes name, national insurance number, contact details and date of birth for applicant and household members.

We also require information on criminal convictions, immigration status and medical information.

We share your information with FHR partners and FHR nomination partners.

You can give us a mandate/permission/Power of Attorney to enable us to speak to others that you are happy for us to discuss your application with them.

We receive additional information from you as a result of the additional proofs you provide to enable your application for housing to be assessed for example letters from doctors, social work, landlords,

We receive information about you and your joint applicant from previous landlords.

We obtain information about you and/or your joint application from previous FHR applications that you have submitted.

By completing this application form, we gather information about household members on your application. Depending on your circumstances we can contact other individuals as a result of information that you have provide for example teacher contact details, support contact details.

In the event that we did not request and use this information then it would not be possible to assess your need for housing.

The Council will not keep your information for longer than is necessary. In some instances the law sets the length of time information has to be kept. The Council has a retention schedule which sets out how long we hold different types of information. This can be found here.

Before applying for housing please look at the Fife Housing Register website. This website includes information and advice on housing options. To ensure your housing needs cannot be reasonablly met by other housing options, we recommend that you complete the housing options assessment to obtain a personalised action plan.   Once in the website, if you click apply for housing it will bring you back here to register with FifeDirect, to enable you to access the online application.


The first step in registering to become a tenant is to fill in an application form.

You can get a form by:

  • Applying Online: You’ll need to register with FifeDirect to access the online application. Once registered you can access the “Online application for Housing” under the Housing section of your account home page.
  • Downloading an application form is not available at this time. Please call 03451 55 00 33 and we will send you one or you can apply online.
  • Phoning the Housing Advice Line on 03451 55 00 33
  • Writing to or visiting a Local Office
  • Visiting one of our Home4Good Centres

We will then assess your application and get back to you within 20 days. We will then write to tell you:

  • how your application has been assessed and the points you have been awarded
  • the category which the application is held within
  • any information we still need that could effect your application
  • how to enquire about or appeal against our decision
