Support for Learning & Pupil Support

Term 1 and 2

Support for Learning and Pupil Support have made a busy start in Term 1 with many of our groups and clubs now in full swing. Mrs Grange and Miss Kirk are working with a variety of groups throughout the whole school.

The Lexia Online programme has been running successfully and has allowed more groups to benefit from the literacy programme. Pupils who are working on Lexiain school will be given passwords to access Lexia from home if they wish. To encourage pupils to use Lexia at home, a prize will be given to the pupil who has done most hours at home.

Groups have begun using the new numeracy programme IXL Maths and are working well in the computer suite. They will be given login details to access the website at home.

All classes will now have passwords to the adaptive online programme SKOOLBO for literacy and numeracy. Pupils will get passwords and access details in their homework soon – please do not change the password as children may then have difficulty accessing the programme at school.

Some of the children in Primary 1, Primary 2 and Primary 3 are working on their fine motor skills, doing lots of tricky activities with Mrs Davidson, Mrs Crichton and Mrs Lees!

In Term 2 we will be restarting the Homework Club after school and the LS Library for some P6 and P7 children will also be available.

The Toe by Toe groups are providing extra support for pupils in literacy skills.

Some small groups have started the LEGO– Based Therapy programme. In which, LEGO building provides a joint interest and goal which can aid social development such as sharing, turn-taking, making eye contact and following social rules. The groups have been really enjoying the challenge of building some tricky models in this way.

Our nurture groups have also now started doing a range of activities including craft, baking and gardening.

Some groups within the school have been benefiting from our Kitbag group which helps children talk about their feelings, encourages talking and listening with respect, and encourages ways in which to remain calm and promotes resilience.

We have a number of support staff now trained in Yogido and a number of children are now benefiting from regular yoga practice. Trained staff are sharing practice with other staff which will allow them to include some Yoga and relaxation into the class day or during PE times. An after school club may be offered later in the session.

We ran two successful Seasons for Growth programmes last session. Seasons for Growth is an 8 week programme that allows a small group of young people to get together to find new ways of coping with major changes in their lives such as loss and grief resulting from death, separation, divorce or other significant events. The programme focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem solving, decision making, effective communication and support networks.

Many children are finding it really difficult to cope with these significant changes in their lives. If you think your child will benefit from these sessions, please contact Mrs Grange at the school for more details.
